Nett Receipts/Dispatches show the difference between grain/oilseeds reported as received and grain/oilseeds reported as dispatched between premises. In an ideal reporting environment, this balance should be zero because every dispatch from one premises should match a corresponding receipt at another.
In practice, differences can occur because of timing, reporting errors, incorrect declarations, or movements recorded in the wrong category. SAGIS works very hard to keep this figure as close to zero as possible.
A positive balance indicates that dispatches exceed reported receipts. In other words, grain was dispatched, but the matching receipt has not been fully reported or correctly identified.
A negative balance indicates that receipts exceed reported dispatches. This means grain was received, but the matching dispatch has not been fully reported or may have been recorded incorrectly.
A nett dispatch may indicate that:
- The destination of the grain is unknown or incorrectly reported.
- It may also suggest that possible exports, end-consumer usage or processing activity have not been fully captured in the correct reporting category.
A nett receipt may indicate that:
- The origin of the grain is unknown, incorrectly declared, or recorded in the wrong category, such as producer deliveries.
- Receipts incorrectly reported as producer deliveries can overstate producer delivery tonnage.
- Imports in rare cases may also be incorrectly declared as local receipts, affecting the accuracy of supply and demand reporting.
Yes. Data is reported per marketing year, and balances are not carried over from one marketing year to the next. As a result, a dispatch or receipt may sometimes be reported in the incorrect marketing year, creating a temporary difference in the nett balance.
“Withdrawn by Producers” refers to stock owned by a producer that is removed from a registered storage facility for use on the producer’s own farm.
This category is monitored closely by SAGIS because these withdrawals may create reporting risks if the same stock is later delivered to another registered premises and incorrectly recorded again as a producer delivery to determine whether additional premises or co-workers may need to register, confirm whether the movement should rather be recorded as a dispatch and receipt, and assess whether any potential exports may have taken place.
