HERSIENE VOORNEME OM TE
PLANT /
REVISED INTENTIONS TO PLANT
1999/2000 SEISOEN/SEASON
SOMERGEWASSE / SUMMER CROPS
A total of 3 700 questionnaires were sent to producers for the revised survey of intentions to plant summer grain crops for the 1999/2000 production season. Replies were received from approximately 1 300 producers who indicated that they intended to plant more maize than in the 1998/99 production season. The survey was done on behalf of the National Crop Estimates Committee (NCEC) and gives an indication of the intentions of producers as at the end of October 1999. Various factors can, however, still influence these intentions. The survey shows that producers intended to plant 118 900 ha (6%) more white maize and 112 800 ha (10%) more yellow maize than in the previous season. The expected maize plantings for the Free State, North-West and Mpumalanga Provinces appear to be 10, 8 and 6% higher respectively. The expected increase can be ascribed to the fact that producers intend to plant more maize in stead of alternative crops like sunflower seed and ground-nuts. The plantings in the remaining provinces also appear to be higher. The expected areas planted to sorghum, dry beans and ground-nuts show an increase of 30, 10 and 2% respectively. The plantings of sunflower seed and soya beans show a decrease of 39 and 19% respectively. The decrease in the planting of these products can mainly be ascribed to poor price expectations (domestic as well as international), high input costs and high stock levels. The largest part (80%) of the maize-plantings in Mpumalanga and the eastern Free State has been completed. Conditions in the rest of the production area are poor and the ground moisture levels are insufficient. Plantings have hardly started, but it isn’t too late to plant summercrops. The normal estimate of areas planted will be done by the NCEC at its meeting scheduled for 20 January 2000. |
