The National Crop Estimates Committee made the second estimate for winter crops on 20 October 1999. The expected wheat crop increased by 36 000 tons from 1,545 million tons to 1,581 million tons. The area planted to wheat was also adjusted upwards by 6 000 hectares. The impact of changes in the climate on the crop is extremely difficult to assess at this stage. In the Western Cape the crop was increased by 9%. In the Swartland area the crop is in general very good, while drought caused problems at a very sensitive stage in the eastern parts of the province. In the Northern Cape the crop was increased by 12% with an increase in the area planted. In the Free State the crop was decreased by 10% due to drought in the western and central parts. In the eastern Free State and Kwazulu-Natal root rot is becoming a problem. In Mpumalanga a slight upward adjustment was made, while the estimates remained unchanged in the Northern Province and Gauteng. In North-West both the crop and the area were adjusted upwards. Due to the drought the yield per hectare has weakened. The estimates for the other products remained unchanged. No further information was received on the
current maize crop and the Committee left the estimate of 20 September 1999 unchanged.

Die Nasionale Oesskattingskomitee het die tweede oesskatting vir wintergewasse op 20 Oktober 1999 afgehandel. Die verwagte koringoes het met 36 000 ton toegeneem vanaf 1,545 miljoen ton na 1,581 miljoen ton. Dit gaan gepaard met 'n opwaartse aanpassing van 6 000 ha in die oppervlakte aangeplant met koring. Die invloed van klimaat skommelinge op die verwagte oes , is baie moeilik bepaalbaar op hierdie stadium. In die Wes-Kaap is die verwagte oes met bykans 9% verhoog. In die Swartland is die oes oor die algemeen baie goed, terwyl die oostelike dele van die provinsie droogte op 'n baie kritieke stadium ervaar het. In die Noord-Kaap is die oes met 12% verhoog, maar dit het gepaard gegaan met 'n verhoging in die oppervlakte aangeplant. In die Vrystaat het die oes met 10% afgeneem as gevolg van droogte in die westelike en sentrale dele. In die Oos Vrystaat en Kwazulu-Natal kom wortelvrot plek-plek voor. In Mpumalanga is die oes effens opwaarts aangepas terwyl dit in die Noordelike Provinsie en Gauteng onveranderd gebly het. In Noordwes is beide die oppervlakte en die oes opwaarts aangepas. As gevolg van die droogte het die opbrengs per hektaar egter verswak. Die skatting van die ander produkte bly onveranderd. Die Komitee het geen verdere inligting oor die huidige mielie-oes nie en volstaan by sy skatting van 20 September 1999.
