The
outgoing National Crop Estimates Committee made the fifth estimate for winter
cereals on 20 January 2000. The
estimate of the wheat crop was increased slightly by 41 000 tons (2,7%).
The rain of the past few weeks caused disruption in the harvesting
process, particularly in the eastern Free State, and it is expected that about
20 000 tons will not be harvested. It
is also expected that the quality of the wheat will deteriorate.
However, as the determination of the quality of the crop is not part of
the crop estimates process, it is not possible for the Committee to determine
the extent of the deterioration.
Although
minor adjustments have been made from month to month, the national forecast has
remained slightly above 1,5 million tons throughout the season.
With an average consumption of 2,2 million tons per year, it is expected
that wheat will have to be imported.
The
estimates of the other crops i.e. barley (90 800 ha), canola (23 000
ha) and lupins (13 000 ha), remained unchanged.
Die
uitgaande Nasionale Oesskattingskomitee het die vyfde oesskatting vir
wintergewasse op 20 Januarie 2000 afgehandel. Die
skatting van die koring-oes het met 41 000 ton (2,7%) toegeneem.
Die reën die afgelope paar weke het die stroopproses redelik ontwrig,
veral in Oos-Vrystaat, en daar word verwag dat ongeveer 20 000 ton nie
gestroop sal kan word nie. Dit word
ook verwag dat die gehalte van die koring sal verswak, maar omdat die
vasstelling van die gehalte nie deel van die oesskattingsproses is nie, kan die
Komitee hom nie uitspreek oor die omvang van die verswakking in die gehalte nie.
Alhoewel
geringe aanpassings van maand tot maand gemaak is, het die nasionale skatting
regdeur die seisoen net bokant 1,5 miljoen ton gebly.
Met ’n gemiddelde verbruik van ongeveer 2,2 miljoen ton per jaar, sal
dit waarskynlik nodig wees dat koring ingevoer moet word.
Die skatting van die ander gewasse, nl. gars (90 800 ton), kanola (23 000 ton) en lupine (13 000 ton), het onveranderd gebly.
