VOORLOPIGE OPPERVLAKSKATTING VAN SOMERGEWASSE:  1999/2000-SEISOEN
PRELIMINARY AREA ESTIMATE OF SUMMER CROPS:  1999/2000 SEASON
20 Januarie / January 2000

The New Crop Estimates Committee made a preliminary estimate of the areas planted to summer crops on 20 January 2000.  The total area planted to maize is 3,205 million hectares, with the white maize area 1,998 million hectares (62%) and yellow maize 1,207 million hectares (38%).  The total area planted to maize is 300 300 hectares more than last year.  The North-West Province is the largest producer of white maize (890 000 hectares), followed by Free State (735 000 hectares) and Mpumalanga (250 000 hectares).  The Free State is the largest producer of yellow maize (450 000 hectares), followed by Mpumalanga (330 000 hectares) and North-West Province (300 000 hectares).

The other products where the area planted increased in comparison with last year are sorghum (27 800 hectares) and dry beans (6 700 hectares).  In certain areas dry beans are still being planted.

Products of which the area planted decreased since last year are ground-nuts (28 175 hectares), soya beans (34 100 hectares) and sunflower (371 650 hectares).  The decrease in sunflower planted by 45 %, is due to the large crop of more than 1,1 million tons last year causing a substantial drop in price this year.  Maize has now been planted instead of sunflower.

Die Nuwe Oesskattingskomitee het op 20 Januarie 2000 ’n voorlopige skatting gemaak van die oppervlaktes aangeplant met somergewasse.  Die totale oppervlakte onder mielies beloop 3,205 miljoen hektaar met die witmielie oppervlakte 1,998 miljoen hektaar (62%) en geelmielies 1,207 hektaar (38%).  Die totale oppervlakte onder mielies is 300 300 hektaar meer as verlede jaar.  Die Noordwes provinsie is die grootste produsent van witmielies (890 000 hektaar) gevolg deur Vrystaat (735 000 hektaar) en Mpumalanga (250 000 hektaar).  Vrystaat is die grootste produsent van geelmielies (450 000 hektaar) gevolg deur Mpumalanga (330 000 hektaar) en Noordwes (300 000 hektaar).

Ander produkte waarvan die oppervlak aangeplant toegeneem het in vergelyking met verlede jaar is sorghum (27 800 hektaar) en droëbone (6 700 hektaar).  In sommige gebiede word droë bone nog steeds geplant.

 Produkte waarvan die oppervlak aangeplant afgeneem het in vergelyking met verlede jaar is grondbone (28 175 hektaar), sojabone (34 100 hektaar) en sonneblom (371 650 hektaar).  Die afname van 45% in sonneblom aanplantings word toegeskryf aan die groot oes van meer 1,1 miljoen ton verlede jaar wat ’n wesenlike afname in prys tot gevolg gehad het.  Mielies is nou aangeplant in die plek van sonneblom.
